About Amarillo, Texas

Looking for an authentic taste of the Old West? Southwest Amarillo, TX is the perfect place to experience the diversity of the past. Every year travelers flock here for many things, including a cowboy morning breakfast.

With the lure of black gold, the region's economy developed quickly. In 1887, the coming of the railroad opened new markets in Amarillo for farmers. By 1899 Amarillo was the commercial and industrial center of the Texas Panhandle. Some of the current economy is focused on ranching, meatpacking, flour milling, zinc and copper smelting, and the manufacture of helicopters, and cattle feed.

Come see western art and artifacts at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. Visitors can find real cowboys at the Amarillo Livestock Auction. Here one can observe the actual buying and selling of cattle. The Historic Route 66 features over a mile of antique, craft and specialty shops, and is an excellent location to enjoy the old buildings.

The Tri State Fair and Rodeo is the biggest event held in Amarillo. It is held at the Tri State Fairgrounds and attracts thousands of viewers from all over the country.
