With the lure of black gold, the region's economy developed quickly. In 1887, the coming of the railroad opened new markets in Amarillo for farmers. Come see western art and artifacts at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. Visitors can find real cowboys at the Amarillo Livestock Auction. Here one can observe the actual buying and selling of cattle. The Historic Route 66 features over a mile of antique, craft and specialty shops, and is an excellent location to enjoy the old buildings.
The Tri State Fair and Rodeo is the biggest event held in Amarillo. It is held at the Tri State Fairgrounds and attracts thousands of viewers from all over the country.
